For many employees, medical cover is the benefit they use most and value most. For employers, choosing a scheme means balancing cost against the protection staff and their families actually need. Comparing schemes on price alone often leads to disappointment when someone needs treatment.
Look at the limits, not just the premium
Check the annual limits for inpatient and outpatient treatment, whether limits apply per person or per family, and any sub-limits for items such as maternity, dental, optical or specialist consultations. A low premium can come with limits that are quickly used up.
Check the hospitals your staff can use
Find out which hospitals, clinics and pharmacies are on the insurer’s network, and whether they are convenient for where your employees live and work, including staff based outside the main office. Ask how treatment outside the network is handled.
Understand chronic and pre-existing conditions
Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma need ongoing care. Ask how the scheme treats existing and chronic conditions, whether there are waiting periods, and what happens when a new employee joins with an existing condition.
Decide who is covered
- Employees only, or spouses and children as well?
- Up to what age are children covered?
- How are new joiners and leavers added and removed during the year?
Make claims simple for staff
Employees judge a scheme by how easy it is to use. Ask how pre-authorisation works for admissions, how quickly claims are settled, and who staff should call when there is a problem. Clear guidance for staff at the start of each policy year avoids frustration later.
