Renewing Your Motor Insurance? Five Things to Check First

  • Gwen Global Insurance Consultancy
  • Motor Insurance

For many vehicle owners, motor insurance renewal is routine: the reminder arrives, the premium is paid, and the policy is filed away. Yet a car’s value, its drivers and the way it is used often change from year to year, and the policy may no longer match. These are the points worth checking before you renew.

1. Third-party or comprehensive?

Third-party cover pays for damage or injury you cause to other people and their property, but not for damage to your own vehicle. Comprehensive cover also protects your own car against accidents, fire and theft. If your vehicle is newer, financed or important to your work, it is worth comparing what each option would mean after a serious accident.

2. Is the vehicle valued correctly?

The sum insured should reflect what it would cost to replace the vehicle today. If it is set too high you pay more than necessary; if it is too low, a claim for a total loss may leave a large gap. Remember to mention added accessories such as upgraded wheels, sound systems or tracking devices.

3. Who drives the car?

Check whether the policy covers every person who regularly drives the vehicle, including family members, employees and drivers. An accident involving a driver the policy does not cover can lead to a claim being refused.

4. How is the car used?

Private-use policies may not cover business use, carrying paying passengers, deliveries or ride-hailing work. If the way you use the vehicle has changed, tell your insurer or consultant before renewal rather than after a claim.

5. Do you know what to do after an accident?

  • Make sure everyone is safe and report the accident to the police where required.
  • Take clear photos of the scene, the vehicles and any damage.
  • Collect names, contacts and vehicle details of others involved and any witnesses.
  • Notify your insurer promptly and keep copies of every document you submit.
